So, since it's 12:34 am and I am just now getting to the 5QF sneak peek, I'm gonna lump the sneak peek and 5QF all into one! I'll post this as soon as I'm done, with the linky...I'll get to my questions tomorrow morning, since I should prolly try to get some sleep, no?

Thursday Baby Girl and I woke up, got dressed, ate breakfast, and even made supper and were out the door in 30 minutes from wake up to driving out the garage...Mama had shoppin' to do!

I am happy to report that I have now made a good start on my Christmas shopping. Hallelujah, I can stop losing sleep about it now! And shop 'til we drop, we did. My mama went with, we sent Baby back with my dad after work and my mama and I shop, shop, shopped!

My feet? They hurt. My check book might be crying a little bit, too, since, you know, I didn't win that Powerball jackpot. Stoopid lottery.

Anyway, let's get this show on the road!

1. What do you give teachers for gifts?

I selfishly picked this one. I never know what to give teachers. Last year, I totally copped out and took the easy, non-personal, totally knew they'd use it route and went with Subway gift cards.

But, gift cards just aren't much fun to give. Weird, isn't that? I don't mind receiving gift cards, but giving them? Total yawn.

I love finding that perfect gift and seeing the delight and surprise on people's faces!

'Course, I don't see the teachers' faces when they open it...could very well be delight and surprise and pure and utter joy over opening a gift card instead of "another candle".

I've heard teachers get so many candles they don't know what to do with them.

So, what I'm saying is...don't take my teacher gift giving advice. 'Cuz I ain't got none!

2. Do you text? One finger texter or total pro?

Total pro. Watching my husband text is like watching my mom type. Painful.

I've actually told my mom to go on kids websites and do some games for typing skills...crazy thing is, she doesn't want to. Weird. The plus side? I could totally kick her ass in typing contest. Words with Friends? Not so much. Typing? Bring it. about a "Typing with Friends" game? Mom, you're goin' down.

Back to texting...I think my typing skills help with my texting, but yeah. I'm pretty quick. Two thumbs all the way.

Fast. Efficient. 

3. Do you give back during the holidays? If so, in what way/which is your favorite charity?

You know, we try to. We usually do some kind of "adopt a family" with my parents...usually a military family.

This season I also want to do some fun Random Acts of Kindness. Just to spread the joy a little...I read somewhere that someone received a Starbucks (or similiar) gift card (small value, like 5 bucks) in a mall from someone...on it was written "To: Random From: Acts of Kindness" fun is that?

There is an anonymous person in town that leaves 10 crisp 100 dollar bills (all at a time) in the Salvation Army bell ringer buckets...last season he/she did this 23 times. TWENTY THREE. Let me do the math for you...$23,000 dollars. How awesome would it be to have the financial security to give that kind of money?

Oh, man would that feel good.

Anyway, so we don't give to one particular organization...we just sorta wing it!

4. If you would've been the sole winner of the 575+ million dollar Powerball jackpot, what would you have done with all that money?

Well, see answer to #3. So, that.

I would make sure to set enough aside for my hubby and I and our kids (not to gain control before they are, I dunno, 30?) to be set (after talking it over with a very reliable financial planner). Then I would've written out million dollar checks for everyone on our Christmas lists.

The rest? Give, give, give. And give somemore. To church, to school, to good organizations. Hand out a wad of cash to a stranger here or there.

Just give. And enjoy giving.

Oh, you guys. This story is just breaking my heart! It sounds like the Utah governor is not amenable to calling in the Air National Guard, they are using a volunteer organization (Civil Air Patrol) with old technology to try to find these three (and their two dogs).

Friends, could I ask you to take a moment and say a prayer?

A friend from high school has been fervently praying for her sister, her niece and her sister's boyfriend...they were flying a private plane home to Wyoming from California last Sunday. Radar lost signal from the plane around noon and search and rescue teams have been searching rugged Utah terrain (they had stopped to refuel in the Fillmore/Mt. Pleasant, UT area).

I can not imagine the horror of not knowing if your loved ones are safe and my heart breaks for her and her family.

Please pray for guidance and wisdom for the search and rescue teams to find her loved ones safe and bring them home.

Oh boy...

Here I find myself 27 days before Christmas, 26 days before the majority of my gifts are needed, 23 days until I start my 4 day work stretch before Christmas (my weekend AND my holiday to work...woe is the life of a nurse) and I've barely started. Oy.

Usually my mom and I do a Mall of America trip to get a jump start on Christmas shopping, which we didn't do this year because of Florida but which we've now both realized just how much shopping we actually got done! By the time Dubya's birthday usually arrives, I'm so deep in "Christmas mode" that I have to change gears and shut off the Christmas part of my brain to do his birthday shopping.

This year?

I was all "Dubya's Birthday mode"! Which isn't so bad, really, but means I'm very far behind.

Which means that every spare moment for the next 23 days I will be shopping. 

Maybe I'll win the Powerball tonight and I can just give out million dollar checks for Christmas.

Hey, that sounds like a win/win for everyone!

It's Horribly Tragic.

I am about to say something I have never said before.

That I swore I'd never say.

Ever, ever, ever, EVER say.

In fact, I'm not even sure I can write it. I'm so disappointed in myself.

It makes me so sad.

*BIG sigh* Are you ready to hear it?


Ugh. I'm not sure I can put it down in black and white.

Here goes nuthin'...


There. I said it. *sob*

Here's the issue...I'm allergic to Christmas Trees. (Well, I'm pretty much allergic to everything, Christmas Trees included.) I'm pluggin' along all fine and dandy and then we go scout out the best tree and chop it down and haul it in and the next thing I know? (Do not ask what I'm doing with my mouth...I can't take a good picture to save my soul.)


Uncontrollable sneezing. Watery eyes. Itchy throat. (Whoa. This sounds like a commercial for an antihistamine.)


Happens every year...only this year it's also making me a little wheezy and when a decoration starts to interfere with breathing, I'm thinking maybe it's time for drastic measures.

Like artificial trees. *waaaaaaaaaa*

But here's my plan...we'll still go Christmas Tree hunting, get ourselves a big, beautiful tree and put it up in the middle of our front yard, decorate it with lights and popcorn and things that maybe the birds will like.


I can't do away with our tradition of getting a real Christmas Tree. I just can't, so maybe, just maybe, this will be the best of both worlds? (Excuse the 47 consecutive sneezes I just sneezed on you.)

Someone tell me I won't ruin Christmas if we get an artificial tree...cause that's kinda what I feel like I'm doing! :(

4 Generations...and P-Dub

So, this is totally old news now, seeing as how Florida happened, Thanksgiving happened, Christmas trees got put up...but whatev. I'll put it here anyway for posterity's sake!

Or something.

A few weeks ago, I found out The Pioneer Woman (who, incidentally has a real name, so let's call her Ree) was going to be at the Mall of America. What's the "Mall of America" you say? Only the biggest mall in, like, the whole dang world. Duh.


Anyway, I debated on going...Gram and I were in the midst of cooking our Thanksgiving meal for In the Kitchen with Gram and I wasn't sure if it was going to work out. When Gram said she'd like to go meet Ree, I knew it was a go! Gram has Myasthenia Gravis, which prevents her from doing a lot of things she'd usually enjoy...but, she wanted to give it a go!


We loaded up 4 generations of women (we finagled my mom into coming along...for my mom, waiting in line for several hours to meet someone for 30 seconds ranks right up there with sticking hot pokers under your fingernails whilst getting a root canal, it's not exactly her favorite thing...this is important, so remember it) into my minivan and headed out to the MOA (that's what we call the Mall of America in these parts).


I think my baby girl was most excited to meet Ree...if given the option, she'd probably choose to move to Oklahoma and become Ree's sous chef. And you think I'm kidding, dontcha?

After 87 billion hours of waiting, it was finally our turn! (Okay, I'm kidding on the 87 billion hours. It was actually less waiting than this time.) A bit of a back story...Ree and I are "friends" on Twitter and I went back and forth about how I introduce myself...5crookedhalos, my real name, Mama M., I wasn't sure, but when we stepped onto the stage her face lit up and she was all "Hi!! It's so fun to see you in person!" and I was flabbergasted! I didn't expect her to recognize me from the itty bitty photo on Twitter, but anyway, we said hi, we hugged, and then this happened:


She asked my baby to sit on her lap and it sealed the deal that my baby wants to call a dog named Charlie her own. ;) So, we snapped some photos (notice my mom looks slightly less than overly excited) and walked off the stage 39.53 seconds after first walking on. ;)

But it was fun. And my Gram got to meet Ree and do something that she hasn't done in a long, long time...which made all the waiting worth every second!

9 Years...whaaaaaa?????

Seriously, where does the time go?

It seems like just yesterday that every time the house got eerily quiet, I could bet that something was being cut apart, no matter how high up I put the scissors. Comforters, doll hair, doll fingers...nothing was safe. Not even the sugar.


I vividly remember the stage that whenever my sweet boy had something he wasn't supposed to have, he would throw it as soon as you went after him to take it...which means that the time he picked up my parents' large glass vase and I yelled "DON'T CHASE HIM!!!" everyone knew to stay calm and act like nothing was awry as someone snuck up behind the little stinker and grabbed the vase out of his pudgy little 18 month old hands.

How is it that he is nine years old today?


This boy that makes my heart swell with joy? Who has a heart bigger than anyone I know...a strong, sturdy, "built like a brick sh*t house" body with a heart so soft and sensitive it belies his hearty exterior.


My child who was first to burst out the door and greet me upon my return from Florida. This boy who is full of questions and always observing, figuring things out, watching how things work.


He is so wonderful.

I recently discovered the perfect job for him...Lego designer. Kid is a Lego mastermind. The way his mind works, he's sure to be an engineer...put the two together, Legoland, here he comes!


Only, I think that's too far away. For him and for his mama. Right now he wants to work for his dad's business when he grows up, and that's just fine with me. It'll keep him close...and that's what I'd prefer!

This boy of mine is suddenly becoming more and more grown up...9! NINE! Do you know what 9 is halfway to? Ugh. Let's not even talk about it. The way the last nine years have flown by, I can't imagine how fast the next 9 will. :(

I love this boy so very, very much. More than he will ever know. He makes me proud and he fills my heart with joy.

Happy Birthday, Dubya!

Thanksgiving...A Day Early.

Tomorrow is my Dubya's birthday, so I'm gonna do my Thanksgiving post today. How's that for ya?

Are you guys all ready for Thanksgiving? I'm not. At all. Nor am I ready for my sweet boy's birthday,, guess what I'll be doing today? Fighting the crowds for a big ol' sack of potatoes (my required dish to bring), and some canned chicken (buffalo chicken dip). Already stocked up on the "kid booze" (sparkling juice) so hopefully I'll grab a few gifts, get my groceries and be outta there.

This year is proving to be a bit hectic...Disney threw a wrench into all sorts of plans, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I asked Belle, yesterday, what her favorite part was and you know what she said? "The quiet. And just having you all to myself."

Forget the rides, and the souvenirs, and the "dreams come true"...she just wanted me. I can't tell you how much that girl warms my heart.

Everyday I give thanks that God chose my husband as my lifelong soul mate. That He knew I needed a man strong in his faith to help me gain ground in my own faith. Thankful that He blessed me with 5 incredible, amazing, unique, and absolutely wonderful children to raise. They are my passion, my pride, my purpose in life. Thankful that He gave me my wild and crazy extended family. Thankful that He granted me the most amazing grandparents a girl could ever ask for. And thankful for a bounty of blessing beyond that, but that pale in comparison to my loved ones.

I am rich in love, that is for certain.

I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Thanksgiving...and if you aren't celebrating, I still wish you a wonderful day of giving thanks for the blessings that surround you.

Whirlwind Disney...

Holy moly you guys...we did it. We're home. We're tired. We're right back in the swing of things, school for Belle and jammies 'til noon for me. :) And you know what? I've missed blogging. My computer battery died on Day 2 and being the uber organized person that I am, I discovered that I left my charger at home (along with one flip flop). Anyway...

I received the warmest, squishiest, lovliest welcome home yesterday...signs and hugs and kisses and more hugs and "what didja get us, mom?"s. My souvenirs were deemed a success and I canNOT wait to show you what I got for baby girl. It's my favorite present ever.

So, not sure if I actually put our trip to "numbers" but, we did 7 major theme parks in 4 days. Animal Kingdom/Hollywood Studios, Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure, SeaWorld, and Epcot/Magic Kingdom. We ran out of time at most parks and I could've spent an entire day at Islands of Adventure. No, scratch that, I could've spent an entire day at "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" in Islands of Adventure.

Raise your hand if you're a Harry Potter fan...yeah, me too, and OMG I felt like I was really in Hogsmeade. They brought it to life, man! Olivanders wand shop? MUST GO. Mr. Olivander was spot on and magnificent! And the Butterbeer? Oh sweet Mother of Jesus, the Butterbeer?

I die. It was sinfully delicious. We're going to try to recreate it...I'll let you know how that goes.

And Universal Studios? Dude. They have a Despicable Me 3D "experience" (we started calling anything that wasn't a rollercoaster an "experience")...that I loved even more because they had "stationary seating" so my motion sickness didn't get the best of me! Again, I could've spent all dang day in that store!

Belle's favorite park? I totally called it before we even left...SeaWorld. (And I got to touch a dolphin! Squee!!!) We happened to visit SeaWorld on the very first day of their Christmas celebration...yes, you heard that right...CHRISTMAS celebration! I was amazed and very, very pleased to see that the parks (all of them!) used the word CHRISTMAS everywhere! 

And SeaWorld even put on a show about the night of Jesus' birth, complete with a live Nativity Scene!

It made my heart sing!

Okay, that's it for now...just received a phone call from the clinic that my biggest boy's throat culture came back positive for strep (Hambone was diagnosed Friday). Feeling like I'm biding my time for everyone else to get sick...

Home again, home again...

Today's the day. We're heading home...and I'm ready. I'm missing my husband and my babies and my bed.

We're leaving the World of Disney with a lifetime of memories, laughs, and a few
extra pounds (that might just be me...Butter Beer, anyone?).

Last night, our final hurrah was the Magic Kingdom and wow. Just look:

It was beautiful. And breath taking. And magical.

And absolutely, positively wonderful.

In the Kitchen with Gram...Cranberry Sauce!

A Thanksgiving Dinner without cranberries is, like mashed potatoes without gravy? Like watching "The Notebook" without tears? You know, it's just, like totally, a necessity, dude.

Gram has THE easiest cranberry recipe.

You ready for it?

Don't blink, you might miss it.

Cranberries, OJ, sugar, and a wee bit o' salt.

Boil 'em 'til the majority of the berries have "popped". 

Then, and this is the most difficult, most involved, horribly tedious step: let them cool. Just kidding about the difficulty, involved, tedious step.

Just set those babies aside until they've cooled. As they cool they'll thicken on their own. It's kinda miraculous.

Serve with your "AMAZING brined turkey" and enjoy!!! 

Gram's Cranberry Sauce
Printable Recipe

2 bags fresh cranberries
2 c. sugar
2 c. orange juice
1/4 tsp. salt

Combine all ingredients in medium pot. Bring to boil on medium high until majority of berries have "popped", cool and serve!

Easy peasy!

Here we Go!!

Well, it's finally time...we're heading to Orlando tomorrow!

My girl, my mom and dad and I are headed for fun in the sun for 6 days...a whirlwind of theme
parks crammed into 5 full days! Actually, scratch that, 4 days. 2 travel days.

We're at a hotel in near the airport and I've already received 2 phone calls from crying children at home. They miss me...but, it so much easier for me to leave them in the fabulous care of their daddy and not worry!

A little parents have a tradition for their grandchildren that when they turn 11, they treat them to Disney...and a "corresponding" parent gets to tag along with only park tickets and airfare as an expense! (That's why I'm leaving my crying kids at home...they'll get their turn.)

In other news, this sweet boy?

I was just asked to be his Godmother!!!!

I am honored to have been that little munchkin!!!

Bathroom Remodel...Day 8,321,543,223

So, one day a few thousand centuries ago, my husband tore into our bathroom. It was a project we'd had on the "fix it up" list that we'd been wanting to tackle but that day, when I came home from work to see a giant hole in the wall where there once was tile, I gulped.

 And I thought, "Well, I guess this means we're really doing it!"

And now, several thousand centuries later, a potential dream house come and gone, a potential buyer for our home come and gone and HALLELUJAH! it's finally seeing some progress.

We were at a standstill forEVER...see, my well meaning husband started this remodel when at the end of his 'slow season', which quickly gave way to 'busy season' which meant I was stuck in 'nothing's happening on the bathroom' season.

Enter aforementioned dream house, potential buyer and HOLY MAN was a fire lit beneath our butts!

We finally decided we needed some outside help. That we were in over our heads on this DIY project, and so came the handy man and his bucket of mud. And then we met with a cabinet guy...and it was this cabinet guy that made me realize our project is nearing completion!

And, now I sorta love our cabinet guy.

What's sad is that our bathroom isn't even finished and it is BY FAR the nicest room in the house. Those horrid 1970's cupboards above? Yeah. They carry through to the kitchen.

Dear me oh my. Now I want to tear down the cupboards...heeeeyyyyyyy, there's an idea! The Mr. did it to me...maybe I should just great him at the door with a crowbar and a shit-eatin' grin on my face with a pile of kitchen cupboard rubble behind me.

Only, I've learned...time is money. And, taking into consideration the amount of time this project has taken, I estimate the cost of this bathroom remodel to be somewhere around where the national debt sits.

Next time? We hire out from the get go. That is, AFTER I've taken out my aggressions on those God-awful cabinets.

In the Kitchen with Gram...Stuffing and Gravy!

Holy moly...if there's anything I look forward to most in the Thanksgiving meal, it's my Gram's stuffing. It is like a meal in itself!

And, in order to make the stuffing, you need to also make the dressing so it's BONUS DAY today! You get two recipes for one post! Aren't we kind? I know.

Okay, let's get started...gravy first! First thing in the morning, on Thanksgiving day, you know, whenever you roll out of bed, toss the giblets and turkey neck and veggies with a bunch of water  on the stove.

This baby's gonna simmer all dang day, so make sure to keep an eye on it and add water frequently!

Add salt:

And pepper:

And remember, you'll need to taste at the end because of all the adding water (and removing broth...which we'll talk about in a bit) you'll be doing! You may need to adjust the seasoning!

When the turkey comes out of the oven and before you cover it, "steal" the juices from the turkey roaster (with a baster) and add it to the gravy.

Now, strain your gravy through a fine mesh strainer to get remove the veggies, giblets, turkey neck (we won't talk about what I think a turkey neck looks like...*giggle*), and little pieces that have broken up during want a nice smooth gravy! (Sorry, no photo...we forgot!)

Next, put the gravy back on the stove and bring to a gentle boil...make a "slurry" of flour...

And water (below amounts are approximate...we had a LOT of gravy!), whisking well to remove all "clumps".

Note: If your gravy winds up "clumpy"...just strain it again. Easy fix!

Add your slurry to the gravy until it reaches the thickness you like and simmer it for a bit to cook out the "raw flour" flavor.

Got it?, onto the stuffing!

At least a day in advance, you need to prep your bread cubes (you can also cook the pork, celery onions in advance as well to help minimize steps on Turkey Day.).

Cut up your bread into small cubes...4 slices top to bottom:

Then 6 (or was it 5?) side to side...

For nice small cubes:

Leave your cubed bread uncovered for at least 24 hours, tossing it occasionally so that the underneath cubes can also get dried out.

Ground pork...with a little extra butter, of course! It's Thanksgiving, afterall...fat grams and calories don't count. Or something.

Add in the celery tops and onion and begin the "cooking down" of them!

When they've started cooking down,

Add in your seasonings...

Poultry seasoning:




Thyme...oops, not quick enough! :)

And sugar that I didn't get a photo of but trust me, it's there. *Bad food blogger, bad, bad food blogger*

Now, if your mental health can tolerate it, add in another stick of butter. (For the record, we did the preceding steps a day ahead, so we added the butter when we were reheating it.)

Now, once your pork is nice and hot and the veggies are all cooked down, you're gonna start stealing broth from the gravy pan.

Add in a good cup, to get the pork mixture nice and "wet".

Simmer it a bit, taste it to make sure the seasonings are right for you.

When it's "perfect"...pour it over the dried bread cubes:

And give it a good toss. Let it sit for a bit, toss it again, then add in another cup of the "broth":

Stir it around and let it sit, then add in another cup of broth.

Transfer it to a baking dish, and bake until heated through. (Just pop it in the oven with anything else you have in there...if it's at a high temp, just remove it sooner.)

And voila! Gram's Amazing Stuffing. A note to raisin haters: I consider myself to be in your camp. Can't stand the suckers...but for whatever reason, I LOVE them in this recipe! I don't know if it's because they cook down so much since they're already (obviously) cooked in the bread or what, but they add a certain amount of perfection to the stuffing!

And, your recipes:

Gram's Turkey Gravy:

Printable Recipe

Turkey neck

Turkey giblets/gizzard
4-6 large carrots
4-6 ribs of celery
1 lg onion
1 tsp salt (likely more after tasting)
1 tsp pepper
1 T Wyler's chicken bullion granules
Enough water to cover turkey parts and veggies
1 cup flour
Water to make slurry with flour (just add small amounts until right consistency)

Cook for several hours, making sure to add water as it cooks down. Strain broth, discard veggies and turkey parts. Add juices from turkey pan, straining again if needed. Return to heat and bring to soft boil. Add in slurry until desired thickness. Serve over mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing, etc!

Gram's Stuffing:

Printable Recipe

2 loaves raisin bread (without cinnamon if possible)-cubed and dried

1/2 loaf of white bread-cubed and dried
1 large onion, diced fine
Tops of 3 stalks of celery (remember, a "stalk" is the whole dang clump of celery, a "rib" is just a single piece of celery from a stalk)-diced fine
1 lb ground pork
1 stick butter
1 T poultry seasoning
1 tsp thyme
1 tsp sage
1 tsp sugar
Salt and pepper to taste (start with a tsp of each and work your way up from there)
Approximately 3 c. broth from turkey gravy ("approximately" because it depends on the moisture in your bread cubes)

Day before: Cube bread and allow to dry, making sure to toss cubes so underneath bread can dry.

Day of: Brown pork, add in butter and veggies and cook down. Add in seasonings and 1 cup of broth. Stir to combine. Pour over cubed bread in roaster, toss. Add in 1 more cup of broth and toss. Judge consistency. We like ours to be like a not very moist bread pudding. (I don't like bread pudding, for the record.) If you think it needs more moisture, add in another 1/2-1 c broth. Taste and add more seasoning if necessary. (Start with salt. Often times a bit more salt totally transforms the dish.) Transfer to baking dish and place in oven until heated through.
